Thread veins - or spider veins - are damaged veins and broken capillaries just below the skin.
Thread veins are extremely common in many men and women. They can be unsightly and make you feel very self-conscious.
As you age your skin loses collagen and becomes thinner, so when veins expand, they become visible through your skin. Prominent thread veins can be inherited, but they are often caused by long term sun exposure, pregnancy, rosacea, alcohol, smoking and standing for long periods.
This involves an injection of a solution (know as Fibrovein) into the blood vessel using a very fine needle. The lining of the blood vessel is irritated and gradually destroyed.
A number of veins can be treated in one session though some veins may need a second session. Sclerotherapy is not used on the face.
This proven technology uses Ndyag Laser to target smaller veins and make them instantly disappear. Ndyag can be used safely anywhere on the body. This laser treatment is also not affected by sun exposure which is why we have replaced it from the conventional IPL treatment.
The treated area may look slightly bruised and may even look worse for a few weeks before it looks better
There may be initial discomfort at the point of injection and some patients feel a brief stinging sensation but otherwise the treatment should be fairly painless.
A course of treatment will be recommended to you. This is usually between 1-2 treatments at intervals of 4 weeks minimum. Typically we can achieve 70-80% clearance but often 100% is reached.
The healing process can take some time after treatment and you will need to complete the course recommended before you see the full effect.
You will need wear to compression/support stockings immediately after treatment and for 7-14 days following treatment. This helps with the efficacy of treatment. We therefore do not recommend having this done during hot weather as it can be uncomfortable
Sclerotherapy provides complete and virtually permanent closure of superficial veins, both large and small. Since the vein is completely closed, blood cannot flow back into it; consequently, over time the vein simply disintegrates and is absorbed by the body. However veins have a potent regenerative capacity despite meticulous treatment technique and it is important to follow your after care instructions.
You may experience a feeling of discomfort, which is similar to the snap of an elastic band or a warm sting. After the treatment, you should be able to work and return to your daily routine immediately. Some patients may get some bruising.
Typically we can achieve 70-80% clearance but often 100% is reached.
Most people will see a noticeable improvement immediately, although it could require several sessions before you see the full effect of treatment.
The Laser used is of a high specification and you can be assured the number of sessions required to treat you is minimalised, saving you inconvenience and unnecessary expenditure.
Laser treatments can result in bruising and swelling of the treated areas, which may take a few weeks to heal. Once the surface has healed, it may be pink or lighter in colour but this will adjust with time
Other treatment types may not produce this complete vein closure. Be aware however, that patients may develop veins in other areas as time passes since the causes of the veins cannot be treated.
