Gynaecomastia is a common condition that affects nearly half of all men, resulting in localized fat and/or glandular tissue in the breasts. For most cases of gynaecomastia, the cause is unknown, but this condition may be linked to certain medications or diseases. Many men are embarrassed by this condition and seek treatment to achieve a smooth, contoured chest through male breast reduction.
There are some medical causes of gynecomastia which include: the use of certain drugs and conditions such as liver disease. Some other causes are associated with weight gain. If you are concerned that you may have gynecomastia, it would be of benefit to reduce your weight as this may improve the situation. If you are taking any medications such as steroids, these can also make the problem worse so should be stopped if possible. In most cases, however, the gynecomastia is idiopathic (meaning 'no cause found for the condition').
There are many reasons why men of all ages and physical builds seek a surgical solution. Some common factors which influence their decision include:
At LasaDerm our experienced and qualified surgeon offers male breast reduction through a variety of techniques. It may be performed using liposuction, surgery or a combination of the two, depending on the amount and type of tissue found in the breasts
During your consultation with the surgeon you will discuss which type of surgery is most appropriate for you. Surgery is not for everyone, and is not a solution if you are carrying excess weight. Your surgeon will outline the risks and potential side effects following this type of surgery and you should take some time to think through the pros and cons before making a decision on whether to go ahead with surgery.
As a man, having prominent breasts can be quite disconcerting. It can be very embarrassing when changing in public, especially as a young man potentially still at school. This can lead to bullying and teasing which can leave emotional scars later in life and a lack the confidence. You could also be unhappy with your physical appearance, and how your clothes sit.
After breast reduction surgery, patients will usually be able to return home the very same day. Post-operative symptoms may include swelling and discomfort, which can be managed through pain relief medication and compression garments worn for the first few days after surgery. Patients will be able to return to work once they feel well enough, but should avoid strenuous exercise for a week or two while the chest heals. For most patients, breast reduction surgery produces a flatter, more well-defined chest that can last for many years, as long as patients maintain a stable weight.
